File 011 · 2025 · Walk-back kept · motte-and-bailey
A monologue is still a sentence. The laugh track is not a source. What follows is the line, the walk-back, and the jokes that arrived after the suspension — not a brief on the FCC.
Exhibit A · One of them
Verdict · Walk-back kept · motte-and-bailey
Monologue, 15 September 2025
Source · first Jimmy Kimmel Live!, 15 September 2025, as quoted by The New York Times and ABC’s own later coverage of the suspension.
We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.
Rhetoric · The monologue sorts the room. “One of them” points. The audience is told who the villain is before the sentence is checked.
Logic · Pointing is not identification. If the antecedent is a class, the person has to be shown to be in it. The line assumes the membership it needs to prove.

Exhibit B · The intention, after the fact
Verdict · Walk-back kept · motte-and-bailey
Return monologue, 23 September 2025
Source · first Jimmy Kimmel Live!, 23 September 2025, reported by HuffPost and others.
It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it. … Nor was it my intention to blame any specific group for the actions — it was a deeply disturbed individual. That was really the opposite of the point I was trying to make.
Rhetoric · The return monologue asks to be heard as the real one. No intention to make light of the murder. No intention to blame a group. A deeply disturbed individual. A post of love to the family.
Logic · The walk-back is on the record, and it is narrower than the monologue. “One of them” is a group assignment. “A deeply disturbed individual” is the opposite assignment. Both cannot be the point. Intention is not a rewrite. A message to the family does not edit what the Monday sentence entailed.

Exhibit C · Expectant widow
Verdict · Walk-back kept · motte-and-bailey
Pretend roast, Thursday 23 April 2026, two nights before the correspondents’ dinner
Source · first Jimmy Kimmel Live!, 23 April 2026, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.
Rhetoric · A roast, a fake video, a compliment that is a death. “Glow” is the velvet on the prediction. Melania Trump is addressed as if the joke were a toast.
Logic · “Expectant widow” predicts a death and offers it as a glow. On 27 April he said it was a joke about their age difference and “the look of joy we see on her face,” and he declined to apologize. That account is on the record. It does not change the words. Trump said the bit used spliced footage of Melania and Barron as if they were in the studio.

Exhibit D · The friend on the island
Verdict · Walk-back kept · motte-and-bailey
Monologue, Tuesday 26 May 2026
Source · first Jimmy Kimmel Live!, 26 May 2026. Guardian and Hello. Don Jr.’s wedding was the Saturday before, in the Bahamas; Trump said he stayed in Washington.
He had circumstances pertaining to government — and also flying to a private island makes him miss his friend Jeffrey, who he lost.
Rhetoric · A skipped wedding is routed through Jeffrey Epstein. The island does the suggesting. The audience supplies the charge.
Logic · Association is not a finding. Flying somewhere is not evidence of a friendship, and a friendship is not evidence of a crime. A place is asked to stand in for a charge.
